The Aegon Masters Tennis Event is now in its 14th year at London’s superb venue, the Royal Albert Hall. It offers great competitive singles matches interspersed with entertaining doubles and exhibition matches played by some of the World’s best veteran players.
Former winners have included John McEnroe,Pat Cash, Guy Forget and last year’s winner Pat Rafter. This year sees the return to tennis of Britain’s Tim Henman following his retirement in 2007. Henman will face former Wimbledon winner Goran Ivanisevic across the net for the first time since their famous semi-final at Wimbledon Championships in 2001.
They have been drawn in the same group and will play each other in the round robin stage of the tournament on Wednesday December 1st. Ivanisevic, who is the World Number 2 in Veterans Tennis said, “The Royal Albert Hall is a fantastic place to play tennis and I want to have that feeling again.”
Henman said, “I am really looking forward to playing Goran again. Our match in the semis at Wimbledon was such a unique match and such a special match because it was of huge importance to both of us, If there is one match people want to talk about with me it is probably that match. I look forward to playing him again and hopefully beating him this time.”
Ivanisevic is equally excited by the prospect of once again playing the man that he beat on his way to winning the life-changing Wimbledon title. He had tried, and failed, three times before when he reached the Final in 1992, 1994 and 1998. He said, “Whenever I see Tim I think of that match and it is going to be great to play him again, especially in England at the Royal Albert Hall.”
