A Quick and Inexpensive Christmas Gift: Toe Warmers

You don’t have to spend a lot to make a memorable Christmas gift. In fact, my sister-in-law made some of these for me a decade ago, and they are probably the best gift I have ever received. I’ve used them every winter since then, and made many myself to send on to special friends.

Warm Toes are a Great Gift!

When I have cold toes it takes me forever to warm up and get to sleep, so this gift was a special treat for me. Especially these days when people are likely to keep their thermostats low, it’s nice to snuggle into a bed with warm and toasty beans down at the feet.

It’s really the easiest thing ever, beans inside a colorful cloth sack. Zap them in the microwave for a minute or two and then snuggle them down in the covers before going to bed. You can snuggle the warm beans all around your toes by sticking your feet in the side and scrunching the sack. That warms you up on all sides. Sometimes, on a very cold night, it takes three sacks to get me warmed up, one for each foot, and another for my knees. We call that a “Three-bean night.”

I often use a bag of warm beans at my desk when I have a cold draft, or if I’m chilly when watching TV. One under my feet, and one on top does the trick. As they cool down, just give them another zap and they warm right up again. My bean bags have lasted for years!

How to Make Christmas Toe Warmers

These could not be easier to make. What I do is rummage through my scrap pile to find the craziest colors I can and cut them into pieces approximately 10” by 10”. The beauty of it is that they can really be any size, and don’t even have to be square. I often make toe warmers out of those strange shapes left when cutting out a sleeve. You can mix and match colors, with any crazy combination for your friends and family.

  • Sew each bag together, around the edges, with a 1” seam, leaving an approximate 3” open space.
  • Turn the bag right side out.
  • Use a funnel to fill the bag with beans, and sew up the last little spot.

Presto! You are done.

Make a Tag and Instructions

Finish your gift with a little tag and instructions. You can get as fancy as you want with this. Or perhaps something simple like:

Warm your toes as you warm my heart.

Instructions: Zap toe warmer in microwave for one minute, and then snuggle to bed for a good night’s sleep.

A Memorable Christmas Gift

Sometimes it’s the little things that really matter. You didn’t spend a lot of money, or a lot of time, on this gift but all those rosy toes will be remembering you through the cold winter.
